About Angelena
Angelena offers original CDs for sale, and a point of communication for those interested in her orchestration, arranging, songwriting, choreography, studio musicianship, performances and lessons in piano, voice, Arabic percussion, Irish tin whistle, and Middle Eastern dance.
Can
one woman really do all this? Yes. Angelena's livelong mission
is to learn and master disciplines to pass on in performance and
teachings. "This
is what I do. Advanced societies are defined by the arts and music
that survive it. In a world where modern media provides so many distractions
from our paths, I feel there is a danger of losing the art, dance,
and music that gives our culture value. It is up to people like you
and me to go out there and learn and master these things and keep
passing them down. I am proof positive that anyone can learn anything
if they set their mind and will to it. It just takes time, patience,
and a willingness to be a beginner for awhile. "
Born August 4, 1972, Angelena studied music composition at Santa Rosa
Junior College and San Francisco State University. She studied Information
Technology at University of Phoenix with distinction, and has studied
with the best and brightest music and dance masters in the US including
Dr Frank Weins, Verna Wicks-DeMartino, Terri Anne, Dr. Val Hicks, Mary
Ellen Donald and Antoine Lammam.
Multi-instrumentalist, dancer and vocalist, Angelena was brought
up on the piano bench, singing in choirs, taking dance classes, playing
flute in school band, being hired as a teenager for church organist positions,
and participating in talent shows and international piano competitions.
She has enjoyed a long solo career as a pianist/singer/songwriter.
After taking her first bellydance class on a dare with her mother in the early nineties, she fell in love with the Middle Eastern styles of music and eventually became a professional bellydancer and later a professional Arabic percusisonist
Spring, 2007, she was approached by the prestigious University of California at Berkeley to teach Arabic percussion as a part of their Music of Egypt instrumental studies courses.
Angelena plays piano, dumbek, tar, riq, finger cymbals, djembe, bohm
system flute, Irish tin whistle, bodran, recorder, and dabbles in various
other instruments.
Angelena has performed most notably with now late Hamza el Din
and The Grateful Dead, The Georges Lammam Ensemble, Nazir Latouf, Mary
Ellen Donald, The Van Winkle Experience, Dusty Wroten and Sophia's Circle,
Sisters of the Moon/Three Sisters Bellydancers and the Seventh Veil Ensemble
(for which she wrote and directed), Skitzo, John Trubee and the Ugly
Janitors of America, and Sadie Luke.
Arabic Celtic Rock fusion ensemble, Boudicca, is now Angelena's
pet project and she writes and arranges the bulk of the group's music
as well as designs the web, graphics and promotional materials. Angelena
is sought after for lessons in her various disciplines, for contract
studio instrumental work, performances, and for producing recordings-
everything from drum solos for well known dancers to music for film and
excercise DVDs.
Angelena is also author of three fictional novels, excerpts of which are available elsewhere on this site for your enjoyment.
